Got moisture? Fababeans could be the crop for you

Fababeans are a great fit for some parts of Alberta, says a producer who has been growing them for nearly a decade.

“Fababeans are a moisture-loving crop so grow really well as an irrigation crop in southern Alberta or more of the wetter areas in central Alberta,” said greg Stamp of Stamp Seeds near Enchant.

Most Canadian production goes to Egypt, which prefers tannin varieties. Pea leaf weevil and lygus bugs are pests to watch for; Chocolate spot is the big disease concern; and the large seed size can be a challenge.

“If you can get past the seeding stage, everything else is easy about growing fababeans,” said Stamp.
