Applications are now open for farmers and ranchers wanting to host visitors during this year’s Open Farm Days.
The annual event, which takes place on Aug. 17-18 this year, set records in 2018 for the number of participating farms and on-farm sales.
Now entering its seventh year, Alberta Open Farm Days features open houses, culinary events, and tours. Farm sales in 2018 reached almost $190,000 over the two days, up 30 per cent from the year before. There were 117 participating farms (up from 101 a year earlier) and the number of visits topped 23,000 (up 17 per cent).
Insurance is provided to all participating farms as part of their registration and there are resources and tips on being a host. The deadline for host applications is May 31.
“Becoming a host is a great way to grow your business,” said Tim Carson, CEO of the Alberta Association of Agricultural Societies.
