Albertans are invited to support local charities, and uplift 4-H members as they complete their livestock projects in new online ways.

From now through June 30, there will be 77 sales where 4-H members will be showcasing and offering steers, lambs, hogs and/or goats for purchase. There are 24 charity projects — 22 steers and two lambs to be auctioned off — with the proceeds donated to a local charity. Successful purchasers can either keep the meat for themselves or donate a portion to local food banks.

COVID-19 has affected traditional club Achievement Days, but clubs have adjusted their formats to ensure they are doing their part for public safety while completing and showcasing their projects.

“This is an excellent opportunity for a double win — supporting local charities that are facing bigger needs currently and encouraging young people who will be the leaders of tomorrow,” said Kim McConnell, 4-H Alberta interim CEO.

“I’m proud of the way clubs are adapting and coming up with creative solutions for marketing their projects. Most have moved to online auctions, but some have chosen to market boxed meat instead. Members are still out working with their animals, taking videos, telling stories even though they can’t have their usual show days.”

A complete listing of upcoming beef auctions can be found on the home page of 4h.ab.ca. It has links to sale info or club contact info for assistance with the online auction. As well, you can contact the 4-H Foundation of Alberta (admin@4hab.com) and make a financial donation. 4-H Alberta will link you to the local 4-H club and the charity it is supporting. Through this method you support the charity and receive a charitable tax receipt.

The 4-H Foundation of Alberta has awarded $80,000 to Alberta rural farm youth who must leave home to pursue a post-secondary education or trade.

The awards, the largest monetary scholarships given out by 4-H Alberta come from Elmer and Ona Hansen Memorial Fund Scholarship (which was created by Lillian and Edward Ness in honour of Mrs. Ness’s parents).

Jade Nelson of Stirling received a $20,000 scholarship, Carter Reed of Delia received $15,000 and Shelby DeSmet of Spirit River received $10,000. Seven others received $5,000: Adele Beaudoin (Red Deer County), Bethany Clark (Bassano), Koryn Duncan (Coronation), Brookelyn Felske (Busby), Samantha Hutchings (Sturgeon County), Tiana Miller (Blackie) and Bryanne Peltzer (Duchess)

“It’s pretty stressful to move out and start university and this scholarship has really helped ease some of my worries about how I would be able to survive university financially,” said Nelson. “Most of all, I am grateful for the opportunities that have arisen because of this scholarship. Next summer instead of simply focusing on trying to make enough money to pay for another year of school, I am hoping to go on a humanitarian trip to help people in developing countries as well as gain new experiences to help prepare me for the years to come.”

The 2020 edition of the scholarship will start taking applications on May 1. The application form can be found at 4h.ab.ca.

The 4-H Foundation of Alberta has awarded the largest monetary scholarship in 4-H Alberta’s history.

Through the 2018 Elmer and Ona Hansen Memorial Fund Scholarship, the foundation has awarded $80,000 in scholarships to 10 Alberta rural farm youth for their studies that began in the fall of 2018. The scholarship was originally established in 2008, thanks to the generosity and leadership of Lillian and Edward Ness who had an unmatched passion for 4-H.

The winning recipients of the 2018 Elmer and Ona Hansen Memorial Fund Scholarship are:

First place ($20,000): Talia Beckie (Rocky View County); second place ($15,000): Isaiah Roemmele (Claresholm); third place ($10,000): Leah Trenson (Rimbey); and fourth to 10th places ($5,000 each): Carter Bodell (Fort Saskatchewan), Odessa Kopp (Duchess), Devin Ewasiw (Thorhild), Ashley Ganske (Millet), Katelyn Imbery (Stettler), Cheyenne Porter (Wainwright), and Emily Taylor (Manning).

“The scholarship gives me the freedom to pursue my academic dreams without having to worry about financial limitations,” said first-place winner Beckie. “If Mr. and Mrs. Edward and Lillian Ness were here with us today, I would tell them how inspired I am to live up to their legacy and that I hope to make them proud.”

In 2019, another $80,000 will be awarded to 10 successful scholarship applicants, who must be Alberta rural farm youth (25 years of age and younger), have completed high school, and enrolled as a first-year student at an acknowledged post-secondary institution. The scholarship is designed to help rural farm youth who must leave home to pursue a post-secondary education or trade.

The application deadline is June 30. Application forms are available on the 4-H Alberta website.

The 4-H Foundation of Alberta was formed in 1977 as a non-profit charitable foundation to build and operate the Alberta 4-H Centre. Today, a big part of its work is the overview and management of scholarships as well as fundraising efforts to support 4-H Alberta’s youth programs and events.

Attention senior members, registration is open now for Selections 2016!

How would you like to partake in a journey of self-discovery? Through small-group discussions, team-building exercises, and large-group presentations, you will investigate your future; how school, career, and personal choices and change can affect your life’s path. Join other 4-H senior members from across Alberta and you’ll experience a ton of fun, share lots of laughs and meet amazing people.

At this year’s Selections program, participants will do self-awareness and self-management skill assessments and will learn and practise strategies for future success. Members will go through a series of small- and large-group activities, discussions, and challenges that’ll help them to manage stress, manage their time, and identify who they truly are so that they may take full advantage of their strengths. Members also learn to think about themselves and how they’re conducting themselves in relation to those around them.

There is opportunity to represent 4-H Alberta at a national or international trip or conference or to be chosen as an ambassador for your region.

Selections 2016 is for members aged 16 to 20. It will be held at Olds College from May 6-9. The cost is $250 with an early-bird rate of $200 if the registration is received by Feb. 15.

4-H Diaries should also be received by your regional specialist for marking by Feb. 15.

To register, click here.
