The money came from BASF Canada, which runs a contest in which producers “share their experiences” of growing InVigor canola. Eight farmers are chosen and can donate $5,000 to a local organization.

The three Alberta operations chosen to play Santa were Timik Farms (which picked the Camrose Boys & Girls Club), DMG Grain Farm (which chose the Holden Agricultural Society) and Wickstrom Farms (which selected the Vulcan & District Minor Hockey Association).

Farm Credit Canada’s Drive Away Hunger campaign got a boost from BASF Canada with a donation of 100,000 meals.

“Now more than ever, our communities need our help,” said Jonathan Sweat, vice-president, Business Management, Agricultural Solutions for BASF Canada. “While a lot has changed in 2020, hunger hasn’t.”

There are more than a million visits to Canadian food banks every month, and that was before COVID-19 increased demand. BASF’s donation will go directly to the communities in which it operates, including Calgary and Lethbridge. Earlier this year. BASF and its employees donated more than $64,000 to Food Banks Canada during its virtual food drive launched in response to the pandemic.

Drive Away Hunger started in 2004 when an FCC employee travelled across Canada in an open-cab tractor trailer for eight days collecting almost 60,000 pounds of food. The campaign has grown to become the largest food drive in Canada, with 100 per cent of donations directly benefiting local charities.

BASF Canada and Earth Rangers are expanding BASF Kids’ Lab, a series of hands-on chemistry workshops developed by BASF for students in Grades 4 through 6, to rural schools across Western Canada. The program has already reached more than 1,200 Canadian students and is now expanding into additional communities in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba with a new agriculture-focused workshop.

From October to December 2014, the program will engage more than 800 students at approximately 30 western Canadian schools, at no cost to the schools or participants. The 45-minute session, entitled We Dig Soil will include an Earth as an apple demonstration to illustrate the amount of land available for agriculture, as well as a fun hands-on activity to illustrate how soil acts as a filter.

“Earth Rangers educates children about the importance of maintaining healthy environments where they live,” said Peter Kendall, executive director, Earth Rangers.

Established at BASF’s global headquarters in Germany in 1997, Kids’ Lab invites children to explore the world of chemistry through safe and fun experiments that are designed to foster an interest in science-related hobbies and, eventually, explore its career possibilities. Over the years, the program has been successfully delivered in more than 16 countries worldwide.

The program will be delivered to schools in Lethbridge, Red Deer, Leduc and six cities in Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
