Medicine Hat Feeding Co. has won the Auction Market of the Year Award, which is given out by the Canadian Angus Association.

Medicine Hat Feeding Co. was formed in 1952 by the Taylor and Thompson families. Regular off-truck sales are held every Wednesday along with pre-sort sales in the spring and fall. Every fall, weekly Canadian Angus feeder sales are held promoting Red and Black Angus calves and Canadian Angus tags. Area purebred breeders endorse the sales which sell 30,000 to 35,000 calves every year.

In addition to the livestock auction, the Medicine Hat company operates a livestock supply store with feed, fencing and grooming supplies and employs 25 people.

The Auction Market of the Year Award was introduced in 2006 to recognize and honour those auction markets that work hard to promote Angus cattle. However, it was not presented in 2020 or 2021 because of the pandemic.

The Canadian Angus Association is Canada’s largest purebred beef breed organization with 2,500 members across the country.

Rick and Sharon Gabert of Crooked Creek Angus Ranch were honoured for 50 years of consecutive family membership in the Canadian Angus Association at this year’s Farmfair.

The Fort Saskatchewan-area ranch began as a dairy and grain operation, started a herd of commercial Angus in 1964, and purchased its first registered Angus cows in 1968. The Gabert family has never missed Farmfair and has shown at the event longer than any other Angus breeders.

The Canadian Angus Association is the country’s largest purebred beef breed organization, with more than 2,000 members. It started its long-term recognition award program in 1998 to honour individuals and families who have demonstrated a long-term commitment to the Angus breed in Canada by maintaining a continuous membership in the association for at least 50 years.

Canadians are being encouraged to become farm safety champions as a part of Canadian Agricultural Safety Week 2015, which runs from March 15-21.

This year’s theme is Be the Difference, and organizers want to inspire all Canadians to become farm safety champions through champion testimonials, farmer resources and a social media contest.

“This year, we are focusing on the power of the positive,” said Marcel Hacault, executive director of the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association.

“We know that we need to engage with all Canadians to make farms safer places to work and live. We’re encouraging all Canadians to become farm safety champions. Health-care providers, teachers, agribusiness leaders, community members and farmers all play an important role in promoting farm safety.”

Farms need to become safer places, said Ron Bonnett, president of the Canadian Federation of Agriculture.

“Injuries on the farm are no joke, and they happen much more often than they should,” said Bonnett.
