CropWatch: We have your Manitoba reports

Manitoba’s agriculture department is still publishing its weekly crop condition, insect and disease updates, but don’t look for them on the department’s website.

A publication ban is in place on government websites during the run-up to Manitoba’s provincial election on Oct. 4. However, the department’s latest updates are available in our CropWatch feature here.

Other updates recently added at the CropWatch page include:

  • a report on “below-average” insect activity in Alberta, although producers are warned to keep a close eye on wheat midge in their fields this coming week.
  • a report on late blight, which hasn’t yet appeared in Manitoba, Minnesota or North Dakota but is worth watching for in tomato and potato crops.
  • the arrival of stripe rust in southern Alberta’s winter wheat.
  • why growers with waterlogged fields may want to consider holding off until next spring on applications of synthetic nitrogen fertilizers.
