Pulses: India needs more pulses

CNS Canada — A few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Wednesday, Oct. 7.

• Average protein levels for peas in Western Canada are coming in below the year-ago level, according to early sample data from the Canadian Grain Commission as of Oct. 1. Of the samples collected to date, the mean protein level for peas came in at 22.1 per cent, which compares with 23.4 per cent in 2014.

• Average lentil protein levels in Western Canada are also down on the year, at 25.7 per cent, according to the CGC. That compares with 27 per cent the previous year.

• India will need to import five million tonnes of pulses, primarily from Australia, Tanzania and Myanmar, according to an official with the Agriculture Product Market Committee, Dhule. A poor monsoon season in India — with too much rain in some states and too little in others — cut into the acres planted and also reduced yields on those fields that were seeded.

• Domestic pulse prices in India are at all-time highs, according to local reports. Some varieties have seen values rise by as much as 40 to 50 per cent over the past week, with merchants forecasting continued price increases.

• Chickpea production in Australia may hit one million tonnes this year, according to Pulse Australia officials. Quality is looking good for now, with the harvest set to begin in November.

• While the issues in India are supportive for Canadian pulses, local bids are holding relatively steady for the time being. Spot bids for large No. 2 lentils are topping out in the 40 to 43 cents per pound area, according to a cross-section of posted prices. No. 2 medium and smaller greens top out in the 30 to 38 cents per pound range. For peas, green pea pricing in the C$7.50-$7.75 per bushel range is generally available, while prices as high as C$9 per bushel can be found for yellow peas. Large-calibre chickpeas are trading in the 35-36 cents per pound (delivered elevator) area, with discounts for smaller Kabulis and Desis.
