A year-long pilot project aimed at helping establish a steady supply of certified sustainable beef for interested buyers is being extended.

“The positive momentum is encouraging,” said the organizers of the Canadian Beef Sustainability Acceleration pilot project. “Due to its success and increasing customer demand for beef from certified sustainable sources, the pilot team is currently working on long-term solutions for program delivery and value sharing with cattle producers.”

In its first year, the pilot sourced 3.7 million pounds of certified sustainable beef, they said. The per-head payment to participating producers in the fourth quarter was $18.24. The program is looking for additional producers.
