Alberta’s Mark Chambers has been elected the new co-chair of the Agriculture and Agri-Food Labour Task Force.
The task force is developing an action plan to tackle industry labour shortages, an initiative of the Canadian Agricultural Human Resource Council with support from more than 60 partner organizations.
“The agriculture industry needs more workers,” said Chambers, a production manager with Sunterra Farms, a family-owned 60,000 hog operation headquartered in Acme, which also has a processing facility in Trochu.
“Labour shortages are affecting current operational success. Finding workers to work and live in small rural communities is very challenging. We need more workers to meet current production demands and to take advantage of export opportunities offered by new free trade deals.”
The other co-chair of the task force is Mark Wales, an Ontario vegetable and grain farmer.
