Applications for the 2023 Nuffield Canada Agricultural Scholarships are now open.

The well-known rural leadership program is available to Canadians involved in any aspect of agriculture, particularly mid-career individuals who are ready to challenge themselves in a program of self-directed international travel and study.

“The $15,000 scholarship provides individuals with a unique opportunity to access a global network in food and farming; achieve personal development through travel and study; and deliver long-term benefits to Canadian farmers by sharing your learning,” the organization said in a release.

“Nuffield Canada is part of a global network of Nuffield alumni who support each other in their travel studies to learn more about various aspects of agriculture,“ said Blake Vince, Nuffield Canada Chair and a 2013 scholar. “This unique scholarship opportunity develops new influencers that go on to reshape our Canadian agricultural sector with revitalized innovation, global perspectives, and leadership.”

Recipients must do a minimum of 10 weeks of travel study within 24 months to examine and research an agriculturally relevant issue. They then write a report and make a presentation at Nuffield Canada’s annual general meeting. For more info, see nuffield.ca. The application deadline is June 30.

With the return to school just around the corner, it’s the season of scholarship announcements — and a reminder that students planning to go to college or university a year from now should mark their calendars for when applications open again.

For example, three Albertans (Catharina Brosinsky, Jessica Hadwin and Torann Mecham) are among the 15 national winners of the 2021 John Deere Canada 4-H Scholarship and will receive $1,000 toward their post-secondary education.

That is just one of many scholarships available for 4-H members — 4-H Alberta alone gave out $270,000 in scholarships to 242 applicants in 2020. The organization has a streamlined application process so completing one online application means a 4-H member will be considered for all scholarships he or she is eligible for.

The Scholarships page on the 4-H Alberta website also has links to other scholarships, some ag based and others general, such as the scholarship matching service studentawards.com.

Two Albertans are the recipients of the Karl C. Ivarson Agricultural Scholarships for 2020.

Jessica Sperber, a PhD student in ruminant nutrition at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, was awarded the $17,000 scholarship for PhD students. Her research focuses on feedlot sustainability and greenhouse gas emissions, utilizing biochar and measuring its impact on methane production when fed as a cattle feed additive. Raised on a cow-calf and grain operation in central Alberta, Sperber maintains, with her parents’ assistance, a small herd of commercial cattle. She was a Cattlemen’s Young Leader in 2016 and is vice-president of the Young Cattlemen’s Council.

David MacTaggart is the recipient of the $10,000 scholarship for master’s students. He is researching forage breeding and development at the University of Saskatchewan with a focus on developing drone-based tools to identify superior breeding populations of meadow bromegrass and cicer milk vetch for stockpile grazing. As a 4-H member and junior leader, MacTaggart organized events such as the Lacombe 4-H County Fair to showcase food production in central Alberta and is currently a director of the Saskatchewan Forage Council.

The scholarships are awarded by the Canadian Foundation for Food and Agricultural Education. It also awards the Karl C. Ivarson Soil Sciences Scholarship, a $2,000 award for students entering their second or subsequent year of graduate studies in soil science. Applications for this scholarship close on April 23. See cffae.ca for more info. — Canadian Foundation for Food and Agricultural Education

Foundation has $2,500 scholarship on offer

Applications are now being taken for seven awards worth $2,500 for students entering or pursuing an agricultural-related program at a Canadian college, university or apprenticeship (trade) institution.

The awards from the Canadian Agri-Business Education Foundation encourage students to take advantage of the many opportunities available in the agri-food sector.

“Employment opportunities abound in the agriculture and food industries,” said foundation chair Jenn Norrie. “Employers are scrambling like never before, and we want to help.”

Applications can be submitted online at cabef.org. The deadline is April 30, 2021.

One scholarship is awarded in each of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, B.C./Territories and Atlantic Canada. Applicants are assessed on a combination of their leadership attributes, and written or video response to the question, ‘What do you consider to be the two main opportunities for the Canadian agriculture industry and which one inspires you the most?’ — Canadian Agri-Business Education Foundation

Ag-Expo rescheduled to mid-March

Ag-Expo and Northern American Seed Fair, which was originally scheduled for Feb. 24-26, has been postponed to March 17-19, pending government pandemic guidelines in place at that time.

Lethbridge & District Exhibition postponed the event and two others (an RV expo and home and garden show) because of more restrictive guidelines.

“We are taking the extraordinary step of rescheduling these important events to ensure that more than 600 small and medium-size businesses in southern Alberta can still have the opportunity to safely showcase their goods and services, as well as maintaining a clean and safe environment for the guests and customers,” said Mike Warkentin, COO of the agricultural society that operates Exhibition Park. — Lethbridge & District Exhibition

Alberta’s Courtney Taylor is one of four winners of 4-H Canada’s Leadership Excellence Awards of Distinction.

The $20,000 scholarship is awarded to students who “demonstrate 4-H values in the way they live their lives” and have become exceptional leaders through the program. Recipients are also paired with a mentor to help guide them in their career plans.

Taylor joined two 4-H clubs when she was 9 and has been active in her community ever since. The University of Saskatchewan student is studying agribusiness with the goal of returning to her family ranch near Warner and implementing new ideas and technologies.

Her mentor is Mike Roberts, manager of the Waldron Ranch, one of the largest ranches in Canada, comprised of 65,000 acres of grazing lands where he effectively grazes more than 13,000 cattle for 10 months of the year.

The other three winners are Josiah Lodewyk from Ontario, Doug Sroka from Saskatchewan and Riley Callahan from New Brunswick.

The award not only recognizes the hard work of the students, but also gives them an opportunity to tell their 4-H story and the impact it can have in communities, said 4-H Canada CEO Shannon Benner

“There’s no better time than now for 4-H,” she said. “Whether it’s looking at the effects of climate change, to some of the staggering numbers around young people in Canada, to feeding nine billion people by 2050, you know, the time is now.

“We need to make sure every young person in Canada is thriving, not just surviving, but thriving. And you know, there’s no reason why we can’t do that here and 4-H has got a big role to play there.”
