China Crop Estimate Optimistic?

Reading Time: < 1 minute

A drought that hit China this season slashed wheat crops in its southern wheat-producing regions so much that final output could be less than most forecasts, the head of French farm and satellite data provider Geosys said last Monday. The USDA estimates the Chinese wheat crop at 117 million tonnes, up from 115.2 million in 2010-11. We really don t understand the USDA estimate, Geosys CEO Damien Lepoutre told Reuters in an interview. Even if the crop is good in the north due to better yields and techniques than before, it is clear that the southern regions are doing far poorer than the other years, he said. Reuters
