A pet food supply firm and major deadstock renderer in southwestern Ontario has picked up provincial funding for a new gasification system to boost its processing capacity.
Atwood Pet Food Supplies, operating in Perth County at Atwood, about 60 km northwest of Kitchener, will get $3.653 million from the province’s rural economic development program toward its project costs.
Atwood will use the funding to “design, purchase and install” what the province described in a release as an advanced gasification system to render and recycle deadstock.
The new system will allow the company to raise its processing capacity to 100 tonnes per day, up from 60, and create five full-time jobs, the province said.

Customers using the company’s services can expect “competitive collection and disposal rates” as a result of the project, the province said, and in turn will “help retain jobs in the beef farming and beef processing sectors.”
“With this investment, our business can partner with local farmers to generate new economic value from recycled organic material,” company president David Smith said in the province’s release Wednesday.
Atwood, a provincially licensed deadstock operator, collects, salvages and renders livestock carcasses of all species.
