Ontario funds on-farm dairy processors

The Ontario government has announced funding for a project to produce, market and gauge the demand for dairy products made with milk from specific herds of cattle. Amount of funding was not announced.

Project Origin is a joint venture between the Dairy Farmers of Ontario (DFO) and five dairy-producing and processing businesses.
“Thanks to the support we’re receiving through the Rural Economic Development Program, we’re helping five farm operations take the step to become on-farm processors. This will help to expand the market for high-quality, locally-produced milk and cheeses,” David Murray, vice-chair of the Dairy Farmers of Ontario said in a release.

Fine against B.C. ostrich farm dropped on tribunal review

The $10,000 fine against Universal Ostrich Farms has been dropped after review by the Canada Agriculture Review Tribunal

The five dairies are:
• Gunn’s Hill Artisan Cheese Co. is based on a small farm in Oxford County and will produce traditionally crafted, high-quality cheeses not commonly available in Ontario using milk from the company owner’s family farm.
• Earthrise Organic Farm milks 35 Holstein and Jersey cows on its farm in Frontenac County. The company plans to produce bottled organic milk from this herd, to be sold directly from its farm.
• Mountainoak Farm operated by Adam and Hanny Van Bergeijk in New Hamburg will use milk from the family operation to make Gouda, Edam and other Dutch artisan cheeses.
• Jalon Farms, a family farm headed by John R. B. Miller located just outside of Creemore, will sell 100 per cent of the Jersey milk they produce from their on-farm processing operation.
• Upper Canada Cheese Company located in Jordan Station has exclusive rights to produce two unique cheeses using the milk from Guernsey cows and will expand its existing facility.
