The RCMP reminds Albertans to exercise caution near rail crossings.

In 2019, Alberta had the second-highest number of total railway crossing incidents, accounting for 20 per cent of all incidents across the country. Of the 35 crossing incidents last year, 11 resulted in serious injury or death.

The province also reported the second-highest number of trespassing incidents last year, with 13 of the 14 trespassing incidents on Alberta rail lines resulting in serious injury or death.

At uncontrolled crossings, people should look in both directions for an oncoming train and remember trains may appear farther away and slower because of their large size, but are likely closer than they appear.

If you see suspicious or unsafe activity on or around rail lines, please contact your local police or the Canadian Pacific Police Service at 1-800-716-9132.
