WINNIPEG – The Canadian dollar surged above the 75 United States cent mark to start the week.
As of 8:35 a.m. CST, the loonie was at US$0.7531 or US$1=C$1.3278, compared to US$0.7475 or US$1=C$1.3378 on Thursday. The Bank of Canada (BoC) did not post an exchange rate on Friday due to Remembrance Day.
The United States Dollar Index increased 0.72 of a point at 107.01.
Crude oil was lower on Monday morning because of lower demand and a rising number of new COVID-19 cases in China. Brent crude oil declined US$1.13 per barrel to US$94.86. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) dropped US$1.28 at US$87.68/barrel. Western Canadian Select (WCS) was down US$1.05 to US$58.54/barrel.
The TSX/S&P Composite Index fell 56.87 points to 20,054.64.
Gold shed US$1.90 per ounce to US$1,767.50.
