Canadian Dollar and Business Outlook: Loonie surpasses 75 U.S. cents

WINNIPEG – The Canadian dollar was on the rise Thursday morning.

The loonie was at US$0.7501 or US$1=C$1.3332, up from US$0.7467 or US$1=C$1.3393 at Wednesday’s close. Yesterday, the Bank of Canada (BoC) raised its key interest rate by 25 basis points to 4.5 per cent, its highest level in 15 years.

The United States Dollar Index was up 0.06 of a point at 101.70.

Crude oil was rising on Thursday morning after China announced that COVID-19 related deaths and severe cases are 70 per cent lower now than during peak levels in early January. Brent crude oil was up US$1.73 to US$87.85/barrel. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) jumped US$1.80 at US$81.95/barrel. Western Canadian Select (WCS) rose US$1.44 to US$58.51/barrel.

The TSX/S&P Composite Index added 40.83 points to 20,640.43.

Gold declined US$5.10 per ounce to US$1,937.50.
