What are the top issues facing Alberta agriculture?

The Simpson Centre is a research policy institute at the University of Calgary’s School of Public Policy. We are committed to strengthening Canada’s agriculture sector through evidence-based research and policy analysis.

Please take our 10-minute survey. We need your feedback on issues you want the provincial government to address. Individual responses are anonymous.

The survey is open until March 13, 2023. Feel free to share the survey.

Our goals for the Alberta Election
On May 29, Albertans will pick their next premier and a government that will set the direction for agriculture policy for the foreseeable future.

The Simpson Centre for Food and Agriculture Policy wants to give Alberta producers a chance to share your thoughts on government decision making by completing our survey. https://survey.ucalgary.ca/jfe/form/SV_aaDAtdLgHbTrhNs

About the Simpson Centre
The Simpson Centre mobilizes research for better policymaking and decision-making to realize a more sustainable agricultural industry. Strengthening the sustainability of agri-food and agribusiness means increasing food production to feed a growing global population, while attending to social and health impacts and the natural environment.

Our three key areas of research:
Agriculture and Society — population health and environment
Agriculture and Economics — sustainable productivity
Agricultural Literacy — public education and outreach

The Simpson Centre remains neutral throughout its research and findings. We connect researchers, citizens, industry stakeholders and government to scientific issues critical to the future of Canada’s agricultural and food system. In a digital information age, where the line between fact and fiction is blurred, we help foster collaboration based on trusted information.

What is the Survey?
The Simpson Centre is looking for Alberta producers to answer a few questions and provide their feedback on government spending and policy. The survey will also help us understand the importance of different policy areas for you and your farm.

From now until March 13, we will collect feedback from Alberta producers regarding the Government of Alberta’s role in addressing climate change, market access, government spending and public trust. You can access the survey by clicking this link. [https://survey.ucalgary.ca/jfe/form/SV_aaDAtdLgHbTrhNs]

The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete. No individual responses will be reported. Your participation is entirely voluntary. All responses are aggregated, and you can withdraw from the survey at any time.

How will the research be used?
From March until election day in May, the Simpson Centre will release a neutral and evidence-based analysis of each party’s respective election priorities for the agriculture sector. Our aim is to provide Albertans with free materials informed by research, analysis, and survey data. All publications will be publicly available on our website.

This project will consist of three reports:

Where We Stand
Historical Analysis

This report will provide an overview of the agriculture sector from 2015 to present. It will look at the provincial government’s role in agriculture, comparing programs under both NDP and UCP administrations. It will include analysis of key legislation and investments to assess how each party used their tenure to shape Alberta agriculture. This report will be published in March.

What We Heard
Survey Data

Here’s where we provide analysis of Alberta producer viewpoints from the survey, to get a sense of the priorities for farmers and ranchers. Themes will explore market access, government spending and climate change. Data will be collected in February and March and we expect to release survey results in April.

What We Found
Comparison to Election Platforms

We will compare findings from the first two reports to party platforms announced in the lead-up to provincial elections and assign an agri-food awareness ranking for each party based on their slate of candidates. Each party’s ability to address concerns and issues for producers will be assessed. The third and final report will be made available in May.

Have more questions about the project?
Shawn Wiskar is lead researcher for this project and can be reached by email at: [email protected]. Questions about the project are most welcome. If you are part of an organization with a membership base in agriculture, ask how you can have our research findings presented via webinar or in-person directly to your group.
