Canadian Financial Close: Loonie, crude oil start week higher

The Canadian dollar moved up at the start of the week.

The loonie closed at US$0.7334 or US$1=C$1.3636, compared to US$0.7314 or US$1=C$1.3673 on Friday.

The United States Dollar Index declined 0.14 of a point at 104.58. Markets in the U.S. will be closed until this evening due to the Memorial Day holiday.

Crude oil prices were higher on Monday on anticipation of increased U.S. demand and ahead of an OPEC+ meeting on June 2. Brent crude oil gained US$0.98 at US$83.10 per barrel. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) rose US$0.83 at US$78.55/barrel.

The TSX/S&P Composite Index added 52.51 points at 22,373.38.

Gold jumped US$18.00 at US$2,352.50 per ounce.
