Global Markets: Battery plant fire in South Korea

  • A fire at a lithium battery plant near Seoul, South Korea, killed at least 22 workers and injured eight more, according to reports. The fire began after batteries exploded while they were being packaged and examined. Most of the dead were migrant workers from China.

 

  • At least 20 people were killed during attacks on churches and synagogues in the Russian region of Dagestan on Sunday, including 15 policemen and an Orthodox priest. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the automatic gunfire attacks, with at least five of the attackers reportedly killed. Dagestan, which is a predominantly Muslim region of Russia, has announced three days of mourning.

 

  • The European Union has adopted fresh sanctions against Russian aiming to close some loopholes in the already-placed restrictions. Included in the 14th package of sanctions on Russia since the initial invasion of Ukraine in 2022 are targets on liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports for the first time.
