Global Markets: One-year anniversary of war in Gaza

  • The first anniversary of the war in Gaza saw Israel launch more air attacks on the Palestinian territory while also increasing its ground offensive. Meanwhile, Hamas launched missiles at Tel Aviv. To date, nearly 42,000 Palestinians have been killed in the violence that began Oct. 7, 2023, after Hamas militants stormed through Israeli towns killing 1,200 people and taking about 250 hostages.

 

  • Hurricane Milton strengthened to a Category 4 storm on Monday, making its way towards Florida less than two weeks after the state was hit by Hurricane Helene.

 

  • The Nobel Prize for medicine was awarded to two scientists from the United States Monday for their discovery of microRNA. The Nobel panel said the discovery by Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun was “proving to be fundamentally important to how organisms develop and function.”
