- Union Pacific announced plans to purchase smaller Norfolk Southern for US$85 billion on Tuesday. If approved, the deal would create the first coast-to-coast freight rail operator for the United States. Union Pacific is primarily concentrated across the western U.S., while Norfolk’s rail lines are primarily on the east.
- Immediate action is required in Gaza to allow food aid, as failure to act would result in “widespread death,” said the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) — the leading global authority on food crises. The IPC said while Gaza has been on the brink of famine for two years, recent developments have worsened the situation. They raised the prospect that the manmade starvation crisis could be formally classified as a famine, in the hope that this might raise the pressure on Israel to let far more food deliveries in.

- The Canadian federal government is moving to add PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, to its official list of toxic substances in light of growing scientific and public concern over the class of thousands of chemicals that are used in a wide range of products from food containers to clothing. PFAS are used for their water and heat resistant properties, including industrial uses like water-repellent coatings.
- Weekly U.S. crop ratings showed corn at 73 per cent good to excellent, which was down one point on the week, while soybeans improved two points at 70 per cent good to excellent. Spring wheat lost three points at the top end, at 49 per cent good to excellent.
