Global Markets: Canada’s unemployment rate, jobs down

Glacier FarmMedia – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

     – Statistics Canada reported on Friday that Canada’s unemployment rate ticked down 0.3 of a point at 6.5 per cent, the lowest since September 2024. Full-time employment increased slightly by 0.3 per cent, but part-time employment dipped by 1.8 per cent. Manufacturing, educational services and public administration were the majority of the job losses, while job increases were in information, culture and recreation; business, building and other support services; agriculture; and utilities.

     – At least 31 people were killed and more than 170 were injured after a Shia mosque was bombed in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, today. Islamabad police confirmed the bombing was an attack, but the perpetrators haven’t yet been identified. Pakistan has seen a surge in militant violence in recent months, including from groups affiliated with the Islamic State and the Taliban. The attack occurred as Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev was on an official two-day visit to the city, but he was not near the explosion.

     – Montreal-based food company Saputo Inc. reported its net earnings for the third quarter at C$220 million, up from a loss of C$518 million in the same quarter one year earlier. An impairment charge assessed to the company’s United Kingdom division was assessed last year. Saputo’s quarterly revenue was C$4.89 billion, down C$100 million from a year earlier.
