  • Crude oil resumed tracking higher on Tuesday, following Monday’s sharp declines, as Israel and Iran traded blows overnight. Brent crude pushed above US$100 per barrel while West Texas Intermediate was in the low US$90 per barrel area. The attacks came after United States President Donald Trump claimed he spoke with Iranian officials over the weekend about seeking an end to the conflict.

  • Farmers in the U.S. and Canada continued to face steep price hikes and shortages for nitrogen-based fertilizers, reports said Tuesday. The ongoing backlog of vessels in the Strait of Hormuz has put a strain on fertilizer production, as a third of the world’s supply comes from the Persian Gulf region. The situation is further compounded by steep increases in diesel fuel just as spring seeding is about to get underway.
  • Farmland values in Canada increased 9.3 per cent in 2025, Farm Credit Canada reported on Tuesday. The strongest gains came across the Prairies, led by Manitoba with a gain of 12.2 per cent, followed by Alberta at 11.4 per cent and Saskatchewan at 9.4 per cent. British Columbia was the only province to see a decline, with farmland values down 1.7 per cent after rising 11.3 per cent in 2024.
  • Tensions between China and Japan were increasing on Tuesday as the Japanese government said it will downgrade its relationship with Beijing. This came after Tokyo released its diplomatic bluebook that outlines Japan’s foreign policy for the coming year. Taiwan’s independence appeared to be at the heart of the downgrade as Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggested the country’s military could be deployed to defend Taiwan.
