Winnipeg, February 16 – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Tuesday, February 16.
– Farmers in the Queensland region of Australia have taken in another large chickpea crop. The crop was pegged at 550,000 tonnes, which is about twice the amount harvested last year, according to the country’s government crop forecaster ABARES.
– An Australian food company says it has developed a way to make white bread healthier using a combination of lentils, okra, barley and fenugreek. Holista Colltech claims its Holista’s patented formula scored a Glycemic Index (“GI”) reading of 53, the lowest-ever achieved by any clean-label white bread in a clinical trial.

– A new survey by Statistics New Zealand shows food prices in the country rose two percent in January. Meat, poultry and fish prices rose 3.3 percent. An official with one of the country’s budget advisory services remarked that a growing number of residents were turning to lentils as a meat replacement for cost reasons.
– Crimson lentils (#1 variety) being delivered to elevators across Western Canada have risen in price over the past month to 45-54 cents per pound, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire.
