Pulses: China’s pulse trade deficit continues to rise

Winnipeg, April 14 – Following are a few highlights in the
Canadian and world pulse markets on April 14.

– China’s pulse trade deficit has been steadily climbing higher, according to data from Stat Communications. Imports of pulses totaled 963,000 metric tonnes in 2015, while exports fell below 500,000 for the first time since the 90s.

– India will start e-trading commodities, including chickpeas and shelling peas, according to reports on Thursday.

– Bühler and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology are teaming up to make alternative proteins like pulses, algae and insects more appealing as food for humans and animals, according to reports.

– Delivered elevator black beans in western Canada are about 22 cents per pound, dark kidney beans are 29 cents per pound, while pinto beans range from 23 to 32 cents per pound, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire.
