Pulses: Lentil prices firm in Australia

Winnipeg, April 27 – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Wednesday, April 27.

– According to a report in Dawn.com, vendors in Lahore, Pakistan are upset with government pricing policies for pulses. One vendor said the official price for mung beans was 130 rupees per kilogram but the market price was over 150 rupees. As a result of this and other disparities, he told the newspaper, provincial governments have been raiding shopkeepers to ensure official pricing is followed.

– Bangladesh has reportedly agreed to provide duty-free access to lentils harvested in Nepal. Meetings between the two countries on that and dozens of other foods are scheduled for May 11 and 12.

– Pulse prices in Australia remain strong with new-crop chickpeas in Dubbo, New South Wales rising nearly AU$100 a tonne over the past week to AU$935 per tonne, according to a report in The Weekly Times.

– Green peas are attracting prices between C$9.00 to $9.75 per bushel at elevators across Western Canada. The same peas are going for C$8.20 to $8.84 (Canadian) per bushel in North Dakota and C$9.09 to $9.47 (Canadian) per bushel in Washington and Idaho, according to the Prairie Ag Hotwire.
