Pulses: South-West monsoon kickstarts seasonal farming in India

Winnipeg, June 13 (CNS Canada) – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Monday, June 13.

– Canada exported 21,600 tonnes of peas and 8,000 tonnes of lentils in the week ending June 5, 2016, according to the latest Canadian Grain Commission data.

– The arrival of the South-West monsoon in India has kickstarted seasonal farming. Sowing of pulses has started in states such as Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Haryana and Andhra Pradesh, according to news reports. So far, a total of 1.46 lakh hectares (146,000 hectares) have been covered under pulses, as opposed to 2.32 lakh hectares (232,000 hectares) in the previous year.

– The majority of dry bean crops have been planted in Canada and the US, with all regions receiving adequate moisture and warmer temperatures to stimulate some rapid growth, according to crop reports.

– Top end green pea prices in the C$9.00 to C$9.75 per bushel range being reported in Western Canada. Meanwhile, top end yellow peas are going for as much as C$12.25 per bushel in some locations.

– Chickpea prices in Western Canada remain strong, with large caliber Kabuli’s still trading as high as 58 cents per pound.
