Pulses: Australia’s chickpea production on the rise

Winnipeg, June 15 (CNS Canada) – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Wednesday, June 15.

– Chickpea production in Australia is forecast to rise by 8 per cent to 1.1 million metric tons in 2016-17, according to reports.

– India plans to import 12,500 tons of lentils to boost supply and moderate rising prices, according to India’s food ministry.

– Dry bean crops in North American are experiencing mixed conditions, with Ontario and Michigan crops experiencing drier conditions, while Manitoba, Minnesota and North Dakota crops are getting a bit too much rain.

– Top end green pea prices in the C$8.75 to C$9.75 per bushel range being reported in Western Canada. Meanwhile, top end yellow peas are still going for as much as C$12.25.

– With this year’s pulse area likely to be the largest on record, Canadian grain handlers are curious how dynamics and timing in the rail freight sector will be managed in the upcoming season.
