Pulses: Australian chickpea prices to soften by next fall

Winnipeg, July 26 – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Tuesday, July 26.

– The National Australian Bank is predicting that Australian chickpeas will fall below AU$700 a tonne by September of 2017, according to a report by state broadcaster ABC News. The market has been super-heated this year due to strong demand from India which has suffered through two consecutive droughts. At one point chickpeas were above AU$1,200 per tonne.

– Pulse Australia predicts that 140,500 hectares of lentils will be planted in southern Australia this year, according to a report in stockjournal.com. Last year 123,000 tonnes were planted.

– The Indian government has increased the minimum support prices for pulses to more than 50 rupees per kilogram for the summer crop of 2016/17, which is up eight percent, according to a report in IndiaSpend.

– Prices for Russian yellow peas have reportedly increased by a small margin in the past week ended July 25, according to the Business Recorder.

– Pinto beans are currently attracting prices of 32 to 33 cents (Canadian) per pound at elevators across Western Canada. The same beans are attracting prices of 37 cents (Canadian) per pound at elevators in Colorado, and 40 cents (Canadian) per pound in North Dakota, Washington and Idaho, according to the Prairie Ag Hotwire.
