Pulses: Bangladesh looks to stop water waste with new meters

Winnipeg, August 15 – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world pulse markets on Monday, August 15.

– The government of Bangladesh has announced plans to install water meters on 60,000 hectares of farmland which is located near three major rivers in the country. The hope is to help local farmers track water usage and losses in irrigated fields more closely. Reports say some farmers cannot cultivate their crops due to the surging cost of irrigation. Water frequently is seen leaking out of the earthen canals that supply the pumps, according to a report in The Peninsula.

– According to Australia’s national broadcasters (ABC) pulse growers in the country should realize a harvest in excess of AU$2 billion this year. That is twice the monetary value of last year’s crop. This includes chickpeas, lentils, lupins, field peas, faba and mung beans.

– The government of Malawi says it has received 355,000 tonnes of orders for a range of its commodities that include pigeon peas, soy beans, ground nuts, sun flower to beans. A report in nkhanimchitumbuka.com says the move was made in the wake of the Malawi-China investment forum that took place in June. The purpose of the forum was to help Malawi take steps to boost its agricultural exports and tap into new markets.

– A report in the Border Chronicle says Australia’s Yorke Peninsula has seen record lentil plantings this year. Better seed varieties coupled with soaring prices are some of the reasons behind the increase.

– Yellow peas are currently attracting prices of C$6.15 to C$7.75 per bushel at elevators across Western Canada, the same peas are also going for C$6.02 to C$7.12 cents per bushel in North Dakota, according to the Prairie Ag Hotwire.
