Winnipeg, Nov. 7 (CNS Canada) – Canada’s pea and lentil crops may be harvested for the most part, but the next growing season is just getting underway in India.
Farmers in the country are in the midst of seeding the rabi (winter) season crop, with early reports showing seedings running 8 per cent behind last year’s pace. However, reports out of India expect the pace to pick up, with the seeding period typically running from October into January.
From a pricing standpoint, number 2 Laird lentils are currently topping out at about 57 cents per pound in Western Canada, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire data. Prices are unchanged on the week, but up from a month ago. Red lentils are bid at up to 35 cents per pound.
Green pea prices range from C$7.50 to as high as C$8.50 per bushel in Western Canada. Yellow peas range from C$6.85 to C$8.00 per bushel.
Large calibre (10mm) kabuli chickpeas are currently seeing prices top out at 53 cents per pound in Western Canada.
