Pulses: Chickpea bids rise in Western Canada

Winnipeg, Dec. 9 (CNS Canada) – Large calibre (10mm) kabuli chickpeas are currently seeing prices top out at 70 cents per pound in Western Canada, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire data. Those are the highest prices of the crop-year-to-date and up by five cents from Thursday.

Earlier in the week, Statistics Canada released its latest production estimates pegging the chickpea crop at only 75,200 tonnes, which would be the smallest production since 2008.

Canada exported 45,000 tonnes of peas and 44,600 tonnes of lentils during the week ended December 4, according to the latest Canadian Grain Commission statistics. Exports of both pulse crops are running ahead of the year ago level.

Farmers have already delivered 2.17 million tonnes of peas into the commercial pipeline, according to CGC data. That’s well ahead of the 1.47 million tonnes delivered by the same point the previous year.

Number 2 Laird lentils are currently topping out at about 62 cents per pound in Western Canada, while red lentils are bid up to 32.5 cents per pound, according to Prairie Ag Hotwire data.

Green pea prices range from C$8.00 to as high as C$9.50 per bushel in Western Canada, rising by about fifty cents per bushel at the top end over the past week. Yellow peas range from C$7.69 to C$9.00 per bushel.
