Pulses: Canadian pea/lentil exports still strong

Winnipeg, Jan. 13 (CNS Canada) – Canada exported 50,800 tonnes of peas during the week ended January 8, bringing the total pea exports to date during the current crop year to 1.935 million tonnes, according to Canadian Grain Commission data. That compares with 1.434 million tonnes at the same point the previous year.

Lentil exports during the week came in at 39,500 tonnes, bringing the yearly total to 549,700 tonnes. That compares with 535,200 tonnes the previous year.

Pulse seedings in India are up 11 per cent compared to this time a year ago, according to an official report from the country. Rabi season pulse plantings to date are estimated at 15.5 million hectares, which compares with 13.9 million a year ago.

Number 2 Laird lentils are currently topping out at about 66 cents per pound in Western Canada, while red lentils are bid up to 30 cents per pound, according to the most recent Prairie Ag Hotwire data.

Green pea prices range from C$8.22 to as high as C$9.50 per bushel in Western Canada. Yellow peas range from C$7.75 to C$9.00 per bushel.

Large calibre (10mm) kabuli chickpeas are currently seeing prices top out at 70 cents per pound in Western Canada.
