Pulses: Lentils go under microscope at U of R

Winnipeg, January 30 – Prices for Kabuli chickpeas (10mm)
on the Prairies were holding steady at 63-70 cents per pound,
according to the latest information from the Prairie Ag Hotwire.
Green peas were also staying firm at C$8.00-$9.00 per
bushel. Yellow peas were listed at C$7.75-$9.00 per bushel.
Laird #1 lentils were pegged at 56-69 cents per pound.

Government officials say new micro-irrigation efforts have also
been attempted on 12,700 acres of pulses and other crops.
According to a report by Sasknow.ca, a new research project
is underway to develop better varieties of lentils. The work is
being done at the University of Regina. Nuclear imaging scans
will be done on lentils to study how drought and rising
temperatures affect the pulses.
A team in Alberta is studying different strains of dry
beans. According to a report by Seed Alberta, the scientists are
focusing on beans with different seed-coat integrities. They
found some seeds came with hairline cracks which can result in
lost starch and clumping at the bottom of the container.
