Pulses: Ukrainian pea acreage on the rise

Winnipeg, March 28 – Crimson lentil prices dipped overnight, according to the Prairie Ag Hotwire. Crimson number one varieties fell one cent to 24 cents per pound.
Pea acreage in Ukraine is on the rise. Pea plantings are expected to hit 276,000 hectares in 2017, which is up 15.5 percent from last year, according to a report from UkrAgroConsult.
Pulse Australia says the 2016/17 pulse crop is worth $3 billion. The crop include lentils, lupins, field peas and faba beans. Approximately 82 percent of it is exported overseas.
According to The Prairie Star, demand for chickpeas in Turkey is growing exponentially. In 2016 alone, Turkey took in 278 percent more chickpeas than the year before. The US is also looking for more chickpeas to fulfill demands from the domestic hummus industry.
Russian pea exports are slightly behind last year’s pace. According to government data, the country shipped out 428,000 tonnes of peas in the first seven months of the 2016/17 season, which is behind last year’s total (from the same time) of 450,000 tonnes.
