Winnipeg, March 29 – Prices for kabuli chickpeas (10 mm) in
Western Canada continue to hold steady at 50-51 cents per pound,
according to information from The Prairie Ag Hotwire.
Black beans were also keeping firm at 39.5 cents per pound.
Australian exporters are looking to Pakistan for increased
exports this year. A report in Queensland Country Life says two
years of poor chickpea production in the Asian country has left

their domestic demand which is pegged at 600,000 to 650,000
tonnes.
A new variety of chickpea has been created at the
University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Agricultural Research Division.
The seed is dubbed “New Hope” and is a large, cream-coloured
Kabuli chickpea, according to a report from the Star Herald. The
new variety features increased disease resistance which should
help protect it from Ascochyta blight. 15 years ago chickpea
acreage was on the rise in western Nebraska before the disease
came in and wreaked long-term havoc on the crop.
Russian pea exports are slightly behind last year’s pace.
According to government data, the country shipped out 428,000
tonnes of peas in the first seven months of the 2016/17 season,
which is behind last year’s total (from the same time) of
450,000 tonnes.
