In the United States, dry edible bean, pea and lentil markets saw light trading activity with good demand, according to the United States Department of Agriculture weekly dry bean, pea and lentil report for the week ending Aug. 8.
The dry bean harvest in North Dakota was reported as 46 per cent completed, Washington state at 51 per cent, Oregon at 54 per cent, Montana at 76 per cent and Idaho had harvested 18 per cent.
Rain in North Dakota brought some relief to drought-ravaged crops, but yields and quality are still expected to be down.
Monsoon rains have come at the right time for crops in India, and rainfall is likely to remain normal for August and September, setting the stage for a good kharif crop (crops grown during the monsoon season.) Rainfall has been normal in most areas of India since June 1, but is rated as normal or excessive in key growing states in the north and west. Pigeon peas are an important kharif crop in India. A bad pigeon pea crop can have Indian importers scouring world markets for lentils to substitute.
Chickpeas and other pulses, as well as cereals, are normally considered rabi crops, grown during drier times of the year.
