Pulse Report: Central Manitoba pintos yield well

Oct. 11 (CNS Canada) – Central Manitoba’s edible bean harvest is about 95 per cent complete, according to the latest crop report issued by Manitoba Agriculture. Yields are reported as above average. Pinto beans range from 1,800 to 3,500 pounds/acre, with an average of around 2,000-2,200 lb./acre.

The North Dakota dry bean stock report recently issued by North Dakota State University shows black bean supply is down 32.7 per cent from 2016. The latest data show 283,428 hundredweight of black beans on hand in the state as of July 31 this year, compared to 420,972 cwt on the same date in 2016. Navy bean stocks are almost steady at 493,174 cwt in July 2017 compared to 491,758 cwt in July 2016 (up 0.3 per cent) and pinto beans are down 8.5 per cent with 1.30 million cwt on hand in 2017 compared to 1.42 million cwt a year earlier.

The United States Department of Agriculture released crop progress reports. Here is a summary of the dry, edible bean harvest from the top five bean-growing states:
– North Dakota: Dry bean harvest is reported to be 86 per cent complete, ahead of the 75 per cent completed pace at this time a year ago. However, drought conditions severely limited yields in some areas.
– Michigan: The dry bean harvest is 77 per cent complete as of Oct. 1, slightly ahead of the 70 per cent completion average for this time of year.
– Nebraska: Bean harvest is below the pace of the five-year average at 70 per cent complete, compared to the average of 82 per cent done.
– Minnesota: Harvest is 90 per cent done, ahead of the five-year average of 89 per cent.
– Idaho: Harvest is nearly complete, ahead of the five-year average of 89 per cent for this time of year.
