CWB raises ’07-08 initials, adds ’06-07 interim

The federal government has approved substantial raises in the Canadian Wheat Board’s 2007-08 initial payments for Prairie wheat, durum and barley, by as much as $131.25 per tonne for No. 1 Canada Western Amber durum.

The CWB announced the approved increase Friday, the same day as a new interim payment for durum and some barleys delivered to the CWB during the 2006-07 crop year.

The increased ’07-08 initials for wheat range from $41.30 (No. 1 CWRS 15.5) to $61.70 (No. 2 CWRS 11.0) per tonne. For milling durum, the raises in initials range from $115.15 (No. 2 CWAD 15.5) to $131.25 (No. 1 CWAD) per tonne.

Feed barley initials in the 2007-08 Pool A will increase $100 per tonne, while the raises for designated barley range from $52.50 (Sample Select six-row, account fusarium) to $61.50 (Select, Standard Select and Special Select CW two-row and Select CW two-row hulless) per tonne.

Farmers who delivered these crops to the CWB between Aug. 1 and Nov. 21 this year will get an adjustment payment, mailed by Dec. 7 or direct-deposited on Dec. 4. Farmers who want to defer payments have until Nov. 28 to inform the CWB.

2006-07 interims

Meanwhile, interim payments will be made on all grades of durum and designated barley delivered to the CWB during the 2006-07 crop year, as well as for Pool B feed barley.

The interim payments will be $9 per tonne for durum, $8 per tonne for designated barley and $53 per tonne for Pool B feed barley.

The board said in its release Friday that it’s looking into the idea of combining this interim with the upcoming 2006-07 final payment. The CWB said to watch for a further announcement on that matter, but if approved, it’s expected the combined payments would be mailed or deposited on Dec. 18.
