Prairie wheat and malting barley growers can expect interim payments in the next few weeks on most grades delivered into the Canadian Wheat Board’s 2009-10 pools.
The board on Friday announced interim payments of $16 per tonne on 2009-10 wheat, and $10 per tonne on all 2009-10 designated (malting) barley. Durum and feed-grade barleys are not included.
On No. 1 Canada Western red spring (CWRS) wheat at 12.5 per cent protein, for example, the interim payment of $16 will be added to the initial payment of $178 per tonne issued Aug. 1, 2009 and a June 3, 2010 adjustment payment of $10 per tonne, for total payments to date of $204 per tonne ($5.55 per bushel).

Meanwhile, on Select CW two-row designated barley, the $10 interim payment will be added to the initial payment of $160 per tonne on Aug. 1, 2009 and a March 18, 2010 adjustment payment of $26.50 per tonne, for total payments to date of $196.50 per tonne ($4.28/bu.).
In the CWB’s final 2009-10 PRO, issued Sept. 23, No. 1 CWRS (12.5) was valued at $220 per tonne ($7.16/bu.), while Select CW two-row designated barley was valued at $209 per tonne ($4.55/bu.).
Farmers who delivered eligible grades of wheat and designated barley to the CWB during the 2009-10 crop year will get the interim payments by direct deposit on Oct. 19 or by cheque as early as Oct. 28.
Final payments, which include the remaining funds still owing to farmers after all crop-year marketing costs are deducted, haven’t yet been announced.
Farmers who’d rather defer the interim payments have until Oct. 13 to call the CWB at 800-275-4292 and say so; a PIN and ID number will be needed for identification. They can also defer payments online through CWB e-Services.
