A Saskatoon manufacturer of industrial weigh scales for livestock, trucking and bulk commodities plans to expand its U.S. reach by buying a Texas firm in the same line of work.
Norac Systems International said Tuesday it has bought Agricultural Scales Inc., a maker of “legal for trade” group animal scales, for an undisclosed sum.
The purchased company, based at Weatherford, about 35 km west of Fort Worth, builds six models of eight-foot-wide scales ranging in length from 10 to 20 feet.
“This purchase, provides an opportunity to increase our distribution system in the southern U.S.,” Norac CEO Bill Strelioff said in the company’s release. “As Norac has historically been strong in the northern states, this is an excellent collaboration.”

The deal, he said, means Norac is “now positioned as the leader in agricultural scales worldwide.”
Agricultural Scales’ owner and founder, Matt Crawford, will join Norac as its scale sales manager for the U.S., Norac said.
Norac’s own major product is also a “legal for trade”-accuracy mobile group animal scale for use in the cattle business, with a low-profile weighing platform and rubberized deck.
Norac, which launched under the name Senstek in 1974 and rebranded itself 20 years later, also makes load bars, truck scales, the OnBoard scale and lift system for bulk goods, and a sprayer height control system.
The company in mid-2007 completed a new 30,000-square foot plant in Saskatoon. It also runs an office in the Minneapolis area managing U.S. sales and service.
