Canada has its first confirmed case of a glyphosate-resistant weed, Ontario weed scientist Peter Sikkema confirmed May 24. Seeds of giant ragweed found in in the southwestern part of the province in 2008 were germinated and and the resulting plants were resistant to glyphosate, Sikkema said at a farmers’ meeting at Uxbridge, Ont. Glyphosate-resistant giant ragweed plants were also seen in several other locations throughout Ontario in 2009. “Now it’s even more important to implement practices to limit glyphosate resistance,” said Sikkema, a scientist in the department of plant agriculture at the University of Guelph.
