Glacier FarmMedia — The Canadian dollar was slightly softer on Thursday, with sharp losses in equities accounting for some spillover weakness in the currency.

The Canadian dollar settled at US$0.7134 or US$1=C$1.4018, which compares with Wednesday’s close of US$0.7140 or US$1=C$1.4005.

The end of the U.S. government shutdown kept some caution in the financial markets, as participants await the release of economic data that was delayed.

Crude oil was firmer, with West Texas Intermediate crude oil up by 0.29 per cent at US$58.66 per barrel.

The TSX Composite Index lost 573.94 points at 30,253.64 points.
