Canadian Financial Close: Loonie, oil slightly lower

The Canadian dollar moved away from the 73 United States cent mark to start 2026.    

     The loonie declined to US$0.7280 or US$1=C$1.3727, compared to US$0.7296 or US$1=C$1.3706 on Wednesday. The Bank of Canada did not publish an exchange rate on Thursday due to New Year’s Day.

     The United States Dollar Index was up 0.10 of a point at 98.43.

     Crude oil prices were slightly lower as oversupply fears outweighed geopolitical tensions in Iran, Russia and Venezuela.

     West Texas Intermediate dropped US$0.12 per barrel at US$57.30. Brent crude oil was down back US$0.08/barrel at US$60.77.

     The TSX/S&P Composite Index gained 170.61 points to close at a record-high of 31,883.37 points.

     Gold decreased US$2.80 per ounce at US$4,338.30.
