Delivering corn hybrids and wheat to either of Husky Energy’s ethanol plants on the Prairies can earn farmers discounts on “a variety of” DuPont Canada brands of herbicides.
DuPont and seed company Pioneer Hi-Bred on Monday announced their new joint offer with Husky. Farmers’ 2008 crops of red winter wheat, Canada Prairie spring red, Canada Prairie spring white, Canada Western soft white and “any corn hybrid” are eligible for forward-contracting to Husky through the program.
Husky is now contracting both corn and wheat for feedstock at its ethanol plants at Minnedosa, Man., and Lloydminster, Sask.

VIDEO: Cereal drought tolerant ratings hard to compile
Cereals and most crops have ratings for disease resistance, yield potential, straw height and other traits, but not drought tolerance. Right now, that sort of information is anecdotal
The program “is definitely a win for growers because it helps them lower their input costs and secure pricing for their crop,” said marketing and sales manager Rolfe Ambach of DuPont Canada in a release from DuPont and Pioneer Hi-Bred on Monday.
“We are giving additional savings to these growers — over and above any savings they can achieve through our existing programs,” he said. “It’s perfectly acceptable for them to double-dip in this case.”
The company didn’t name the specific herbicides available for discounts through this offer, but mentioned its Refine, Harmony, Triton and Express brands elsewhere in its news release.
Specific corn and wheat contract prices weren’t listed in the release. Husky in November and December was known to be offering $6 per bushel for January delivery to Minnedosa. The fuel company also has a feed wheat supply agreement with Viterra.
“While many Western Canadian farmers are unfamiliar with growing corn, our extensive corn research efforts are making it a viable new crop for many areas in the west,” Pioneer Hi-Bred’s area sales manager Herman VanGenderen said in the same release.
“Over the next few years, our sales rep team will be actively promoting corn in the vicinity of the two Husky facilities” and helping farmers learn to grow the crop, he said.
Farmers can get details on this offer from either of the two Husky Energy facilities, their DuPont rep, the DuPont FarmCare Hotline or their Pioneer Hi-Bred sales rep, DuPont and Pioneer Hi-Bred said in their release.
