China seeks improved ties with Canada amid rising trade tensions

China called on Friday for steps to improve bilateral ties with Canada, saying there were no deep-seated conflicts of interest, following a spike in trade tensions with many of Beijing’s Western trade partners this year.

Of course the grain farmers were a bright light for railroads — they are a captive audience. With the repealing of the Crow freight rate agreement, however, farmers began their lobby for a non-Wheat Board option to deliver their grain southward as the railroads (and government) sacrificed any loyalty or respect farmers may have had for either of them. The time is coming when the farmers will take their business elsewhere en masse. — Stu Innes

“Ont. Greenbelt not saving livestock operations: study,” Dec. 24

I thought your comments were very good. I live on a farm zoned Greenbelt; as the land is needed for development, it will be gobbled up anyway. All it has done has prevented the farmer from getting a true value for his retirement. As housing builds up, the urban homeowner really doesn’t want hogs or sheep or chickens right beside them anyway. — David Best
