Alberta hog producer Jurgen Preugschas has been named the new president of the Canadian Pork Council, replacing Ontario producer Clare Schlegel after four years at the organization’s helm.
Pruegschas, who farms at Mayerthorpe, about 120 km northwest of Edmonton, is joined by a newly elected executive committee including first vice-president Jean-Guy Vincent of Ste-Seraphine, Que., representing the Federation des producteurs de porcs du Quebec and second vice-president Bryan Ferriss of Bowsman, Man., representing the Manitoba Pork Council.
Other executive committee members include Curtiss Littlejohn of Ontario, Stephen Moffett of New Brunswick, Herman Simons, also of Alberta, Jerry Gelderman of British Columbia and Florian Possberg of Saskatchewan.

Preugschas’ new role follows his recent appointment by the Alberta government as a farmer director of its Institute for Agriculture, Forestry and the Environment, to explore how the province can best tap into demand for environmental goods and services.
Schlegel, who farms at Tavistock, Ont., will also remain on the executive committee in the position of past-president, Preugschas said in a council release Wednesday.
The new executives were elected at the council’s recent meeting in Edmonton, where topics included the state of the Canadian hog sector, a pork value chain round table strategy, food safety and animal health initiatives, World Trade Organization talks, U.S. country-of origin labelling (COOL) and Canadian Pork International, the council said.
