Canadian National Railway has named a new vice-president to market the railway’s services to the grain and fertilizer sectors.

Andy Gonta, CN’s new vice-president for its bulk business, is one of six vice-presidents named Tuesday to a new senior “marketing team” led by CN chief marketing officer Jean-Jacques Ruest.

Gonta, who will operate out of Edmonton alongside Montreal-based CN’s Network Operations Centre, will also be responsible for CN’s bulk sulphur and coal businesses.

Gonta was a vice-president of automotive sales and marketing before he completed CN’s “Railroad MBA” program in 2005 to “enhance his railroading skills,” the company said. Since then, he’s held various senior positions in CN’s operations.

Scientists are developing hybrid wheat seeds that promise higher, more consistent crop yields as drought becomes more common across the U.S. Plains.

Also of interest to agribusiness among the VPs named Tuesday are Paul Waite, who will work out of Toronto and oversee domestic and international intermodal services, and James Cairns, who will oversee CN’s petroleum and chemicals businesses from Calgary.

“The seasoned executives on this team are skilled and innovative marketers who know the benefits of precision railroading, are strongly customer-focused, and are committed to driving profitable revenue growth and increased shareholder value at CN,” Ruest said in a release Tuesday.

Stan Jablonski, most recently CN’s senior vice-president for sales, has agreed to serve as senior advisor to the company through the “organizational transition” to the new marketing group, the company said.
