Some Manitoba producers are reporting purpling in the leaves of their recently-planted corn fields, according to provincial cereals specialist Pam de Rocquigny on the Manitoba CropChatter site.
Purpling of corn plants indicates the plant is under some kind of stress, she wrote, and “in a lot of cases, these corn fields were planted after canola.”
Therefore, while it’s not the only possibility, she said, “chances are what producers are seeing is phosphorous deficiency, or ‘corn after canola syndrome.'”
