(Resource News International) — The Canadian Wheat Board and Cuba
have signed a deal that will see 150,000 tonnes of Canadian
wheat be shipped to Cuba during 2007-08 crop year, the board confirmed Tuesday.
CWB CEO Greg Arason signed the agreement with
officials from Alimport, Cuba’s food importing agency, on Monday,
said CWB media manager Maureen Fitzhenry.
She said the current wheat sale will be on top of some sales
that have been made previously.
Total Canadian wheat sales to Cuba in 2007-08 now sit at
200,000 tonnes, Fitzhenry said. “This would represent the
most since the 1990-91 season in which Canada shipped 472,000
tons of wheat to Cuba.”
The latest agreement calls for the shipment of six cargoes
of Canadian wheat between April and July of 2008, Fitzhenry said.
Arason was at the annual Havana Food Fair, where
Canada has a booth.
No word was available on the quality of the wheat
called for in the agreement. Price details of the
agreement were also not available.
